John Smithies has been Director of Cultural Development Network (CDN) since 2005. CDN is an association of local government arts and community development workers, artists, academics and policy writers. CDN advocates for a cultural perspective when developing policies that impact on changing communities. John studied at the Tasmanian School of Art, the South Australian School of Art, Monash University and the Academy of Fine Art Karlsruhe, Germany. John has worked extensively in arts development, programming, exhibitions and education. From 1992, as Director of the State Film Centre of Victoria, he developed and opened the Australian Centre for the Moving Image at Federation Square in Melbourne in 2002.

John is based in Melbourne, Australia.
