Professor John Fein has three related interests in urban research, all focused on ways of enriching the concept and experience of urban democracy. First, he is researching community-based leadership in urban projects and the roles local government can play in promoting this. Second the community-directed projects that can flow from this enriches social learning for sustainability and new motivations and skills for sustainability citizenship. Third, he is interested in the ways that social learning can contribute to public advocacy and action that advance “the right to the city”. He also has a special interest in urbanisation in South-East Asia and approaches to leadership that can advance resilience through disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
