Barcelona Ethical Cities event
Critical sustainable development issues such as affordable housing, urban energy transitions, public spaces, social inclusion and innovative financing will be debated at the upcoming ‘Ethical Cities: Urban Innovation Forum’ in Barcelona which is being organised and hosted by RMIT Europe, in collaboration with UN-Habitat.
Building on the first Ethical Cities event—the Urban Thinkers Campus, which was held in February 2016 in Melbourne and jointly organised by the UN Global Compact – Cities Programme and World Vision, this Urban Innovation forum convenes key stakeholders on urban sustainability, resilience and social inclusion.
To be held on July 6, 2016 the forum will discuss the ethical frameworks required to guide city-shaping actions and enhance urban life for all. It focuses on integrating the core principles of the United Nations Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour rights, environmental sustainability, and transparency and anti-corruption into urban decision making. It supports the two co-related United Nations global agendas, the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda which will be endorsed at Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development in October 2016 in Quito, Ecuador.
Cities Programme Director, Professor Ralph Horne will join panelists from local governments, UN-Habitat, academia, the private sector and civil society. They include representatives from the cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Stockport, UN-Habitat Barcelona, architecture and science and technology universities and research institutes, Arup, a local renewable energy cooperative and a civil society organisation campaigning against energy poverty.
To broaden the reach of Ethical Cities in Europe, RMIT Europe will be hosting an Ethical Cities campaign in Barcelona in June and July featuring a series of events on urban sustainability, resilience and inclusion.
