World Urban Forum 7

The 7th session of the World Urban Forum – 5th to the 11th of April 2014, Medellin, Colombia.

The 7th World Urban Forum will focus on “Urban Equity in Development – Cities for Life”. More than 10,000 participants, including heads of state, governors, mayors, the international community, professionals and the private sector will be in attendance.

This session of WUF will be the key platform for discussing the role of sustainable urbanization within the framework of the Post-2015 development goals and the upcoming Habitat III, the Conference of Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, to be held in 2016.

This is the first time the WUF has been held in Latin America. It will be hosted by the city of Medellin, who recently committed to the Global Compact and won the  Innovative City of the Year.  The city will be showcasing many of its achievements and practices in socially transformative urban development.

Global Compact Cities Programme events

The Cities Programme will be host or contribute to a variety of events at the Forum, in collaboration with partners and cities. One of the primary events which will be  a networking event to bring Global Compact cities together, particularly those in Latin America. It is titled “Cities In Collaboration” and aims is to strengthen partnerships between cities and businesses that are committed to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact to build equitable, just and sustainable societies, increase knowledge of good practice and build networks around innovation and transformation, based on cross-sectoral collaboration.

The Cities Programme are supporting collaborative partners, Techo in a side event which features Techo’s practices in Vivienda Social Definitiva (Permanent Social Housing). It will include results of collaborative research between UNGCCP, Techo and RMIT University that looks at strategies to optimize housing affordability through its lifecycle  to the social and economic benefit of residents.

In addition to Techo, the Cities Programme will be collaborating with the Colombia Global Compact Network, the Latin American Caribbean Center for the Support of the Global Compact, RMIT University, Parana Sustainability Alliance and World Vision International and lead participant Colombian cities, Medellin and Bogota.
