Birigui Communication on Engagement 2018
The Brazilian Municipality of Birigui signed the commitment to the Ten Principles of United Nations Global Compact in May 2016, the second municipality in the State of São Paulo to become a signatory. With this Communication on Engagement document, the Municipality continues the sustainability actions initially aligned to its Global Compact commitment and presents new initiatives. Birigui's platform includes: the participation of the local community in decision-making; an urban economy that preserves natural resources; social equity; correct land-use planning; urban mobility; global climate and biodiversity conservation. With the firm intention of expanding its actions, the Municipality has institutionalised the Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals, publishing the Municipal Decree No. 5,678 / 2016. This has been updated with renewed confirmation to institutionalise the SDGs by the new Mayor, Mr. Cristiano Salmeirão and all the new secretaries with the publishing of the Municipal Decree n ° 5.768 / 2017 - with particular attention to advance SDG 11 – “Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
