Dr Joan Clos to open New Urban Agenda Conference
The New Urban Agenda Conference announced last week that Dr Joan Clos, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Habitat, will open the conference: Implementing the New Urban Agenda: making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
The event will be held 4-5 May 2017 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Victoria. The event is presented by RMIT University, Compass Housing Services, World Urban Campaign, Co Design Studio and earoph; and sponsored by Victoria State Government, DELWP, Liveability Victoria, Unity Housing Company and Launch Housing.
As the official document guiding the next phase of the UN Habitat program, the New Urban Agenda (NUA) is set to shape and direct urban policy for the next 20 years in 167 signatory nations.
The conference will bring together a wide range of stakeholders from government, civil society, academia and the business community. As well as keynote speakers, the conference will provide significant workshop content to address specific professional interests and foster multi-disciplinary collaboration.
This represents a unique opportunity to hear in person from the Director of UN Habitat about the development and implementation of the New Urban Agenda and its global significance. His contribution will set the context for the conference in this important first stage of implementing the New Urban Agenda in Australasia and the Pacific region
For all nations, the challenge posed by the NUA is to achieve effective implementation over the next 20 years. Governments globally will not be able to do this without the collaboration of a wide range of financial, private sector, public sector, academic and not-for-profit agencies.
The conference will provide the first opportunity in Australasia and the Pacific region for those who work in planning, infrastructure, economic development, social inclusion, health, equalities and sustainable urban environments to explore the implications of the New Urban Agenda and begin the development of a roadmap for its implementation and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
